Are fatty foods really as bad for you as we used to think they were? There was a time when we used to blame all nutrition-related health ills on eating too much of this macronutrient but is that still the case?

What Does Eating Fatty Foods Do to Your Body?

Do you know that there are different types of fats, and that certain types of fat are actually good for you? In fact, there are specific kinds of “good fats” that are considered essential to proper growth, development, and function.  This can mean that certain fatty foods that contain the right types of this macronutrient and that are eaten in the right portion sizes can be good for you.

The Good Fat/Bad Fat Debate

While some are unaware of this difference, it is important for a person to be getting enough good fat in their diet to suffice proper living. On the other hand, staying away from “bad fat” is one of the only ways to ensure an optimal physical health. Sometimes, bad fat can have to do with the type of ingredient you’re eating. At other times, it has to do with the amount you’re consuming, because too much of even the good form can work against you.

Fatty foods can fall into either category – good fat or bad fat – so be sure you know the difference.  That way, you can make informed choices about your meals, snacks, and portions.

Telling the Difference between Good Fat and Bad Fat

Simply put, good fats (or unsaturated fats) come from sources such as fish, nuts, beans, and legumes. Most of these foods are all jam-packed with essential omega-3 fatty acids as well, which are great for proper brain function.

Bad fats, however, are found in items such as processed foods, animal products (meat, dairy, certain types of cheese), fast food, and even in some cooking oils. Dishes which contain items from the “bad fats” category are considered to be the worst of the world’s fatty foods.

The Bad Fat Effect on the Body

As if things were not confusing enough already, it turns out that there are a couple different types of bad fat – saturated fats and trans fats to be exact. Both of these, when found in fatty foods, can wreak havoc on your body.

Simply put, bad fats of either type can significantly increase a person’s risk of developing one, or even all, of the following health problems:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High LDL Cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Cognitive Disparity
  • Mood Swings
  • Ulcers and/or Indigestion
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Chronic Lethargy

Should You Eat Fatty Foods?

As you can see, eating too many fatty foods is not the greatest idea. While a lot of the world’s fattiest foods are manufactured to be highly appealing to the average consumer, you must rise above if you want to maintain your health.

Remember that the pleasures of eating fatty foods are short-lived but eating healthy is something you can enjoy the benefits of for quite some time.
